Child Care and College- Should the colleges that offer day care be equal about it?
Should colleges that offer child care during the day also offer child care at nite to be fair? Should colleges that offer child care offer child care regardless of age? The college that I am currently attending only offers child care from 6:30 AM to 6 pm. Shouldn't the college also offer it at night for the students that work during the day and attend school at night? The college offers child care but only if the child is three years old and potty trained. Should they offer child care to everyone regardless of age? This is not for me, this is a question I was given by my professor for a proposal essay. My college does not offer child care for free, the students due have to pay for it, and it is open to residence of the city. My college offers early childhood education classes, I opt for the students to work in the day care to lower classes and for hands on experience. What is your opinion?

- yes
- Colleges don't have a requirement to be fair. They don't have to offer child care at all. The fact it's there is a blessing.
Sure it would be easier. That would be great. Talk to your college if it really bothers you. However, it's going to be tough.
Also, being in college and having a kid is tough. I've been there. Would you REALLY trust a college daycare to raise your child that's under 3 years old? I know I wouldn't.
- No. If you attend school at night, you're probably not a full-time student, since you can't really fit all those necessary classes in at night - and most colleges don't offer the basic courses at night. Also, day care providers need special training and licenses to care for younger children - and your college probably won't bother providing that for free, since it would cost them a lot more. Can't you get a babysitter or something?
- They should offer day care at night but shouldn't have to offer day care to newborns. Its a lot more work to take care of a newborn than a 3 year old. Newborns have to be bottle fed and diaper changed. Changing a diaper and dealing with feces could be a hazard so thats why they have to be potty trained.
Actually, the college doesn't HAVE to offer day care at all. Look for private daycare outside of college for your newborn.
- I think there are laws about the age limits. The potty trained restriction is to save the day care some money on diapers, you would be amazed at how many people would bring kids in diapers to the day care and not have enough or sometimes even any diapers. I worked from 7pm till 3am one job and got lucky to find a daycare to watch my child at night, even though it was 45 minutes out of my way I did what I needed to do. So maybe if you check around you might be able to find a day care to watch your child at night for a few hours while you are in school. And to really answer your question I think that it is good enough that they offer day care during the day, and that it should not be required to watch the kids at night, consider some on-line classes until you actually have to attend the school.
- I'm going to say a big fat YES. Just because you have a child(ren), you shouldn't be restricted from doing things that other people can do. Know what I mean? It's really hard to go to school when you have children. There's a lot of young and older parents that are trying to further their education, but find it difficult to always have childcare available.
