child care post

How do you find a safe part-time child care service for a two year old child?

My son has been staying home with his grandmother while we work. I think it's time to let him play with other children.

  1. i am a certified early childhood educator, so i could ramble on about what is the best from a professional standpoint. i am also a mother of three who works full time and has had children in daycare so from my own experience in finding childcare............

a home daycare setting is ideal for a child this age. a licensed one is best if you don't personally know someone who provides in home daycare. if you have to go with a private or government daycare, that can be great as well. it's great to let children this age socialize with their peers. check the yellow pages, craigslist, govenment agencies..........whatever. however you find child care, you need to make sure the environment is what you want for your child.

    my requirements are:

    - a safe home and equipment

    - good child/adult ratios. because you son is 2 you should go by the "only 3 under 3" rule

    - toys, lots of them and and they should be age appropriate

    - a comfortable quiet room for your son to have a nap with the option of a playpen/crib or cot

    - home cooked meals that are varied and nutritious

    - an inclusive environment

    - open outdoor spaces nearby i.e. a backyard with toys or a nearby park

    - references

    - a general good "feeling" about the childcare provider and their family, someone who you can talk to and trust

    - a firm policy regarding how they discipline your child that you are comfortable with

    - a program of activities that is flexible for young children

best wishes in your search for quality care for your child.

  2. Make sure that the building is secure and there is a process for pick up and drop off. Most places have the doors locked and only a parent can enter or need written permision from the parent.

Look around the room. Make sure the power outlets are covered. Also, look to see if the artowrk of children is hanging up. Look to be sure the room has different stations to encourage different types of play and learning. Speak with the teacher/director before hand as well.
